Tajan - The French Art Auction |
|
|
Tajan is not one of the larger auction houses in the art world, but the little art auction house is a very famous one. Based in Monte-Carlo and in Paris, it has for years offered some of the most interesting art auctions anywhere.
The scale of Tajan auctions is smaller than the big houses, but they have a very international outlook and a huge international clientele. Their service is more personalized than the bigger houses, and that attention to detail is seductive to both buying and selling collectors who are assured of the highest quality research and dealings. Tajan is one of the largest art auction firms anywhere, but seems smaller since they deal primarily in paintings and sculptures rather than the all encompassing events held at Sothebys and Christies. They also publish many art books and articles and try to strengthen the French market through specific events. They support more than twenty areas of the art market and have on staff some of the leading experts and specialists in the field. Recently, Tajan announced a merger with Phillips Auction house of London, which will certainly give the bigger auction houses a new run for
their money. The money behind the merger comes largely from Louis Vuitton assets and thats bound to add a certain cache to the new deal too. This move will also make Paris much more of an auction center than it is currently. If the markets in New York and London have to shift to accommodate it, the art auction will become all the more interesting.
Tajan and Phillips are definitely on the move to bigger and better things, and if you are visiting Paris, you should check it out. They have an auction a week, and you are bound to see things there that you wont in London or New York!
