AFX Slot Cars Introduction Print E-mail

AFX slot cars have been bringing live racing action into our homes since the 1960s. The 1960s and early 1970s were the height of slot cars popularity with sons and dads setting up racing tracks in the basement and attics. Racing clubs sprung up around the country. There was even a professional league set up.
But as the 1970s finished and moved into the 1980s the popularity waned and a number of manufacturers closed. AFX slot cars survived this period of slot car wilderness but only by being sold a number of times and eventually were bought by Tomy where they remain today.

AFX slot cars are made in the HO scale. In slot car scales this is a 1:64 scale and is different to the model railway scale which is 1:87 scale. The cars are about 2.5 inches in scale. Because of this size you can get a lot of action in a small area – with tracks coming with corkscrew turns, flyovers, uncontrolled intersections. They also make sets that have 4 lanes as the standard track layout.

There are currently nine different sets on the market. They range from their beginner set the AFX Infinity Raceway , a classic 8 figure track layout with two lanes to the AFX Super International with 18 standard track layouts all with 4 lanes.
